What is language?

According to dictionary definition language is, “The method of human communication, either spoken or written, consisting of the use of words in a structured and conventional way,” or, “The system of communication used by a particular community or country.”[1]. According to Andrew Carnie this is the difference between Language (i-language) and language (e-language) in linguistics. I-language is the ability of humans to speak any language. E-language is a particular language, such as English, Spanish, or Guatuso. [2].
