Dutch or German?

Dutch and German are similar; both belong to the “West” line of Germanic branch of Indo-European languages. However, German comes from Old High German and Dutch comes from Old Saxon. (English also belongs to the “West” line of the Germanic branch, though English comes from “Anglo-Frisian”). Interestingly, Low German is descended from Old Saxon like Dutch, not Old High German like German. Follow link to answers.
