Symbolic Presidents

Sometime one comes across statement like vote for so-and-so because it is about time the U.S. had a woman president. This would be symbolic voting, ad that is wrong. Why is it wrong? Because it is absolutely pointless. Here is a list of types of presidents the U.S. have not had:

There has never been a president that was of Asian decent;

There has never been a president that was of Canadian decent;

There has never been an Italian-American president;

There has never been a Jewish president;

There has never been a Muslim president;

There has never been an atheist president;

There has never been a presidents whose first name was Jean-Baptiste;

There has never been a president the was a CEO of a fortune 500 company;

There has never been a president that wore a cape while addressing Congress;

There has never been a president that has been to space;

There has never been a president with a physics or chemistry degree;

There has never been a president called James Adams;

There has never been a president from Wisconsin;

There has never been a president that wore a Star Trek custom during a speech;

There has never been a thrice divorced president;

There has never been a president that only had one leg;

There has never been a president married, at different times, to two people with the same name;

There has never been a president that wrote a high fantasy trilogy;

There has never been a president that braided his beard;

There has never been a president whose first name stated in ‘q’;

There has never been a president whose first language was not an Indo-European language:

There has never been a president that was formerly a professional sports player;

There has never been a president that preformed tap dance to the Stewart Little soundtrack, wearing a giant hat, holding the Constitution in one hand and a violin in the other, while on camera;

etc. etc. etc.

To vote because someone is the first president with such-and-such a quality is utterly pointless. Only one person out of a nation 318.9 million people is elected to the office every four years. It is no shock that there has been a statistic lack of diversity, it does not reflect on the nation but on the people that run for president.

“There are three kinds of lies: a lie, a damn lie, and a statistic.” – Mark Twain.
